Appropriate Independence

Shepherds College is a place for individuals with intellectual disabilities to obtain "Appropriate Independence." This is defined as supported self-sufficiency that is aligned with the strengths of each individual and guided by Christian values. This independence is linked with dignity and empowerment. Our desire for these students is to succeed to their individual capacities while living a fulfilling Christian life.

Shepherds College has defined this term using four main principles, and teaches them to the students.

o Principle 1 - Everyone is designed on and for a purpose.
o Principle 2 - Everyone is created as individuals for community.
o Principle 3 - At Shepherds College, everyone is learning things as training for life.
o Principle 4 - Everyone is empowered to serve.
